  • About Pink Day

Introduction

PinkDay is the day the Standard Bank Proteas men’s cricket team dresses in pink and plays a Momentum One-Day International in support of breast cancer awareness. It’s a day where we celebrate the human spirit to overcome breast cancer. It’s a day when survivors, friends and family, and cricket fans young and old dress up in pink in support of breast cancer sufferers and their families. It’s a day where we raise awareness and money for the Charlotte Maxeke Breast Care Clinic, who work tirelessly every day to beat it. It’s also the day that we remember, joyously, the brave people who died from breast cancer. In fact, PinkDay and dressing up in pink has become so synonymous with the cause that wherever, whenever you “Pitch Up In Pink” you’re doing your bit. Find out more about how you can get involved and pitch up in pink!

History Of The Pink Day

A little history

Since 2011 the Proteas have not lost a PinkDay international! What’s more, many records have been broken by Proteas on the day – it must have something to do with the fans pitching up in pink.

The Cause

We’re pitching up in pink for the Breast Care Unit at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, run by Doctor Sarah Nietz and her team of dedicated specialist nurses. They tirelessly provide access to quality breast care, regardless of geographical location and socioeconomic status. The unit sees up to 350 women with newly diagnosed breast cancer every year and provide a service to seven district hospitals from Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and even further afield. Patients from other provinces and all over Africa are also accommodated. On an annual basis, this hospital treats more than 200,000 patients!

Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital also trains medical students, interns, medical officers, registrars and junior consultants in breast care making it a centre of excellence in this field. There is also a “Breast course 4 Nurses” programme to empower nurses in breast care.

The Event Hosts and Board of Directors

Event hosts, Cricket South Africa (CSA), Momentum, Bidvest together with the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium are the founding partners of PinkDay. This PinkDay they are pulling out all the stops to make sure that the objective of increasing breast cancer awareness is met and that more money than ever before will be raised for breast care support. The goal is raise more than a R1 million! The previous record is R750 000. So, we need everyone to get involved and pitch up in pink.

All funds raised will be given to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. A board of directors has been appointed to oversee this transaction is done responsibly and transparently.

CMJAH Breast Clinic

CMJAH Breast Imaging Clinic

The Breast Imaging Department at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital offers a complete imaging service to many patients from not only Gauteng but from many of the other provinces. Patients are able to access mammograms performed on a state of the art machine, complete with tomosynthesis and contrast mammography capabilities. Additionally, sonar and breast MRI are available. Biopsies are done on site either with sonar or stereotactic guidance.

The new, modernized, revamped Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital Breast Imaging Unit was officially reopened on 8 November 2016, after the installation of new equipment that brought the unit to the forefront of breast imaging.

The goal of screening tests for breast cancer is to find the cancer before it causes symptoms. Breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast. The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the prognosis of a woman with this disease. As with all cancer screening, recommendations for breast cancer screening rely on a combination of factors involving evidence about the risk of the condition, the benefits and harms of screening, and the cost.

The gold standard for screening of the breast remains the mammogram. Mammography reported by radiologists is the foundation of early detection of breast cancer.

All patients can access this department for both asymptomatic screening or diagnostic imaging. Women are often irrationally persuaded by the fear of radiation risk, which is negligible, to use other ‘imaging techniques some of which use heat or light to “detect” a cancer. These imaging techniques are often operated by personnel with no medical training and no training in conventional breast imaging. There is no evidence that these methods have any value in the screening and detection of breast cancer when compared with mammography. They may do harm by missing breast cancers, leading to delayed diagnosis and limited treatment options, if they are used as a substitute for mammography.

The Johannesburg Hospital Breast Imaging Unit is run by a dedicated team comprising  highly qualified and experienced radiologists and radiographers, headed by Dr Jackie Smilg.
